BENISSA: A Municipality with Two Souls

This picturesque municipality is divided into two main areas: Benissa Costa and Benissa Campo. Benissa Costa, located between Moraira and Calpe, is characterized by its 4 km coastline dotted with small coves and cliffs, ideal for enjoying the Mediterranean Sea. On the other hand, Benissa Campo, which surrounds the urban center, is a rural area with landscapes of vineyards and orchards, where traditional estates and modern country houses can be found. This area also houses local restaurants and the train station, offering a relaxed and authentic atmosphere.

A Journey Through History

The history of Benissa dates back to the Neolithic period, with evidence of human settlements in the area. During the Muslim domination, the municipality was known as “Bani Isa,” and many of the names of its rural districts retain this Arabic origin. After the Christian conquest in 1248, Benissa was repopulated by settlers from Catalonia, Aragon, and the Balearic Islands, who left their mark on the local culture and traditions. Over the centuries, the town suffered attacks from Berber pirates and, after the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, underwent a new repopulation.

Living Culture and Traditions

Benissa preserves a rich cultural heritage, with monuments such as the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, known as “The Cathedral of the Marina” for its size and Neo-Gothic style. The historic center houses stately homes, charming squares, and the monument to the Riberer, which honors the farmers who emigrated to the Valencian riverside to work in the rice fields. Additionally, the municipality celebrates various festivities, such as the Patron Saint Festivities in honor of the Puríssima Xiqueta and the traditional Moors and Christians festivals.

A Privileged Natural Environment

The natural environment of Benissa is another of its attractions. The Sierra de Bernia, with its nearly 1,200 meters of altitude, offers hiking routes that allow for panoramic views and rich biodiversity. Moreover, the Benissa coast is ideal for practicing water sports such as diving, sailing, and surfing.

Benissa is a place where history, culture, nature, and tranquility merge, offering residents and visitors an exceptional quality of life on the Costa Blanca.
